RMIT students power up with new print centre

RMIT opens new managed print centre at its Brunswick campus.

Stephen Somogyi, vice president resources at RMIT, officially opened the facility today amongst a 30-odd crowd of RMIT staff, students and Fuji Xerox representatives.

The new Brunswick print centre is one of four Fuji Xerox-managed sites at RMIT that caters for all the design, printing, finishing and on-site delivery needs of the university, from over-the-counter photocopying to the secure printing of exam papers. A service hub is located at the Bundoora campus, and a student copy centre and new customer service hub are located at the CBD campus. The new Brunswick site and CBD customer service hub replace the services offered by a former site in the CBD.

The Brunswick site, which employs five staff, is equipped with a Fuji Xerox Nuvera 288 production system and a Nuvera 144 production system, and is much smaller than its CBD predecessor. According to John Magnik, programs director at RMIT, the launch is the latest development in a 14-year relationship established in 1995, when Fuji Xerox first supplied RMIT with printing devices and support.

“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Fuji Xerox for a number of years; they enabled us to begin our path down the digital revolution," he said. "This new print centre enables our own students to train and receive training on the high-end side of digital technology.”

RMIT is one of many tertiary institutions around Australia to outsource its print work, citing cheaper costs. Steve Jordan, Victoria state manager, Fuji Xerox believes that the outsourcing will have positive financial effects for RMIT.

“Using modern devices and workflow techniques, Fuji Xerox is able to provide the same capability and high standards of service with a smaller footprint, which reduces the university’s real estate overhead,” he said.
