The Sinnott Bros employee was chosen with difficulty from a strong field of six young graduates that covered a broad spectrum of industry processes.
The line up was split evenly between the sexes with the three girls – Nicole Clark, a litho printer at News Limited, Lauren Peat, a prepress operator at Integrated Marketing solutions and Patrice Yeo, screen printer at Jet Swimwear – amply demonstrating the demolition of gender barriers in the industry. Samuel Moss pipped the other two males too – Shammugan Vadiveloo, print finisher at Ligare and Romeo Abellana, a gravure printer at ANZPAC.
- LIA Heidelberg Graduate of the Year , Samuel Moss receives his award from Savas Mystakidis, Heidelberg state manager NSW.
In this 50th anniversary year of the LIA, the breadth of skills and specialisations on display was a notable cause for optimism at the North Ryde RSL last night (Tuesday). Mitchell Mulligan as MC made glowing reference to the quality of the candidates to the 70 plus audience. Luke Wooldridge, chair of the examining committee, detailed the difficulty in deciding between candidates of such calibre.
Rugby League legend Wayne Pearce was the guest of honour. In his role as motivational speaker he delivered a stirring address to the assembled members and especially to the Graduate Candidates.
Representing the long-term sponsor of the Graduate programme, Savas Mystakidis, NSW state manager, Heidelberg presented the certificates to all the candidates and the award to the winner.
It was particularly pleasing to this correspondent to see the presence of LIA Life Members; Robert (Bob) Lamont, Greg Grace and Angus Scott. Half a century later the Association continues its inimitable course of not only providing a link with the craft-based past but a clear path towards the future of the industry.
