Sappi expert urges all printers to go green

In a recent interview with Pulp and Paper Edge, Martin recognised the ever-increasing threats to the environment such as global warming and climate change. Though Martin admitted that most companies in the western world had made efforts to operate their business in a sustainable manner, he did strongly urge for printers to get involved more.

"Printers should be taking responsibility and ensuring that they demand and enforce environmentally responsible purchasing policies," he told Pulp and Paper Edge. He listed factors such as paper companies planting more trees than they cut down as positive developments for the industry but also believed that companies must do more to get their message across.

The cost of enforcing environmental policies and practices is often seen as a deterring factor for many printers; but the benefits outweigh what might seem like a heavy figure, Martin believes. "At present there are still too many printers who will gladly take a saving of a few dollars offered by a less than responsible manufacturer," he said.
