Global packaging company Schur International has acquired Melbourne labels and flexible packaging specialist Burgess Printing & Packaging to strengthen its position in the Australia and New Zealand markets.

Danish-based Schur owns 15 companies globally, offering folding boxes, flexible packaging, packaging machines and packaging systems. The 170-year old, family-owned packaging group has a staff of about 900 employed at factories in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, the USA and now Australia.

Burgess Printing and Packaging, located at Thomastown in Melbourne’s north, is a well-established, family-owned packaging company that supplies the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, industrial and chemical industries. Burgess employs 40 people and has a yearly revenue of close to $A18 million.

“As part of our strategy to develop the Schur Star concept worldwide, we are pleased to have acquired Burgess Printing and Packaging,” said Schur CEO Hans Schur. “We look forward to continuing the close working relationship with the existing customers and to developing the Burgess business and market further. The acquisition firmly anchors the Schur Star concept in Australia and New Zealand."

Schur Star offers pre-made flexible bags custom-made for filling on a linked production line, providing producers, packers and growers with the ability to change bag size and functionalities within five minutes, according to a company press release.

Jan Evans, the fifth-generation owner of the Burgess Group, welcomed the deal. “Schur, like Burgess, is based on long-standing family values and a focus on supporting the demands from their customers."
