For John Scott (pictured), director of the family-owned Scott Print, the huge awards haul at the event is a welcome endorsement of the company’s substantial investment in its digital division over the past year, along with its continuing focus on workforce development and environmental accreditation.
“We were proudest of the FutureNow Commitment to Workforce Development award,” said Scott. “Tim [Scott] and I have done a lot work over 18 months with our staff, and trying to implement change in the business. We’ve also been doing the Lean Manufacturing course for some of our staff and we felt that a lot of the awards came through the fact that we’ve been able to streamline our business and get our staff on board with that.
“The other area we’re equally proud of is the digital area. We’ve really been investing in digital and that department’s got it all sorted now,” he said. “We’ve bought the Indigo press, the 5000 which has a fifth imaging unit on it as well, the PUR binding and we’ve bought our own Horizon stacker/folder as well, among many other machines for digital production. Compared to twelve months ago the department has a much more cohesive team.
“The other big one for us was the environmental award, and to win that again,” he said. “We went for the FSC this year and we’ve also gone to chemistry-free Sonora plates. Kodak has come to the party to help us implement that change.”
The prestigious Kodak Best of Category Award also went to Scott Print for the Midland Atelier book.
The LIA Graduate of the Year Award was introduced by the LIA’s Peter Scott before crossing to Peter Shardlow of Heidelberg for announcement of the winner – Timothy Smith of Quality Press.
Manish Shah of Quality Press was the Media Super Future Leaders Award winner and will go on to represent Western Australia against winners from all other states in 2014.
Phil Brown of Promotional Graphics won the Fujifilm 2013 PICA Printing Industry Recognition award for his work on the WA PICA committee over many years.
Printing Industries state manager for WA, Paul Nieuwhof, said the 2013 event received an increase in entry numbers in 2013 from a wider selection of companies largely due to better promotion of categories before the event and the introduction of new categories.
“Our masquerade ball theming was also a hit with guests encouraged to modify their ticket, which by chance was also their mask,” he said.
