Setting the standards for PIXI Awards
Amidst the deep thought conference of Fuji Xerox’s Innovate11 in Melbourne, printers honour the 2011 PIXI ( Printing, Innovation and Xerox Imaging ) award winners from Australian and New Zealand.
Before presenting the awards, Alf Carrigan, chairman of the Asia Pacific PIXI judges, emphasized that small faults held back many printers from achieving first place. Click here to see the image gallery
“One of the things that let good print down is a lazy fault, especially in the print finishing area. For those who are going to enter the awards next year, please double-check your submissions and concentrate a little bit more on the finishing side,” he says.
According to Carrigan, one of the most expericned print award judges in the industry, the Bowden Group’s comic book submission into the PIXI industrial competition was the first time he had ever seen such a medium win a digital prize. It reflected the ever widening use of digital printing.
He noted that when judging the awards the quality of print and finishing carried a 35% weight, while use of digital technology was reflected in 20% of the overall scoring.
Rounding out the judging criteria at 15% apiece included overall aesthetics, degree of innovation and business effectiveness. Though Carrigan notes that this last point was largely passed over since the majority of companies who submit entries do not fill out this field in their entry form.
After congratulating the PIXI winners, Simon Lane, national manager of graphic communications at Fuji Xerox Australia also urged companies seeking to submit entries next year to look closely at print finishing. He encouraged entrants to to take the time to fill out the business effectiveness fields in their submission forms.
“Measurement of the media and campaign is such a powerful thing in terms of proving our relevance to the market,” says Lane.
