Long-time Foilmasters GM Matt Murcott says the decision to buy the embellishing business from Colorpak will allow his new company MatteGold to focus on customised products.
Murcott bought the trade client list and most of the machinery after Colorpak decided to sell Foilmasters and concentrate on its carton packaging operations.
Murcott has formed MatteGold as an independent embellishment company and moved the machinery out of the Colorpak site to set up his new business in nearby Governor Rd, Braeside in Melbourne.
“This is a very exciting time for my family,” said Murcott. “I envision MatteGold to be the go-to company for bespoke embellished products as well as continuing to service the ex-Foilmasters client base. I have no desire to enter the large format market, keeping our sheet sizes to half sheet and below, which will give me the opportunity to focus on custom product.”
Murcott said he began talks with Colorpak about the direction of the company in April this year. “Colorpak made it very easy to move forward with a purchase decision and provided a solid business base to give me the best chance of success.
“Foilmasters has always serviced both the external trade market as well as providing in-house embellishment for the group. By 2015, external trade work was only contributing a small percentage of overall sales, whilst in-house embellishment was growing thanks to the move to the Braeside site from Dandenong and the technical collaboration and product development between BrandPack, Colorpak Sales and myself.”
Murcott says he’s optimistic about the future. “The embellishment trade is an interesting one, as most of us know. To save costs, it’s normally the first process to be dropped. To increase sales, we add embellishment. The cycle of foilstamping ebbs and flows, so we are splitting our process offerings from your basic business cards right through to high-end security products as well as an online shop for designer prints. The future as far as I’m concerned is bright - and shiny.”
Colorpak will retain the Foilmasters brand for embellishing work for its own packaging customers.
