Time running out for leaders to enter SWUG
The closing date for nominations for the inaugural SWUG Leadership Scholarship is approaching and all potential nominees are urged to get their applications in soon if they wish to take part in this bi-annual award.
The scholarship, valued at up to $20,000 for the recipient, is open to anybody who has demonstrated 'dedication, motivation and enthusiasm for the single width coldest newspaper printing industry as demonstrated through his/her leadership with colleagues and/or customers.' All applicants must also have worked in the industry for five years or more.
Nominations for the award close on August 17th, 2007, and the winner will be announced at this year's SWUG conference due to be held at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort, Sunshine Coast in Queensland from October 5th - 8th, 2007.
Host site will be the two-year-old APN print centre at nearby Yandina, a state-of-the-art newspaper production facility and home to the leading local daily, the Sunshine Coast Daily.
According to Bob Lockley, SWUG president, the return to Queensland is sure to draw a big crowd, especially with the Yandina site visit.
"This is an ideal venue for our conference, convenient to all local attractions and it means that, for the first time in several years, all delegates will be accommodated at the same location and at the actual conference venue," he said. "Being on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, this is sure to be a popular destination and I would urge everybody to get their registrations in early."
In addition to the Leadership Scholarship, closing dates have also been announced for the SWUG Apprentice of the Year and the SWUG awards for excellence in newspaper production. Closing date for these competitions is 21st September, 2007.
The Apprentice of the Year award is open to all third and fourth year apprentices at newspaper production sites and provides a chance for the production staff of tomorrow to find out more about how the industry operates and the opportunities available for their advancement. Last year's winner, Matthew Wynne from Rural Press Printing Murray Bridge will be undertaking a tour of major production sites around Australia and will attend this year's conference to report on his experiences.
To be eligible for the three major SWUG print awards, all coldset newspaper entries (category 1 and 2) should be printed between 20th August to 14th September, 2007, and, for coldset commercial products (category 3), printed between May and August 2007.
