Printing is a diverse industry encompassing many processes. Print Awareness: Print Production Techniques is an introductory course outlining printing and finishing work flows. There is also advice on how you can achieve great results and get the most from your printing budget.
Aim:
This introductory module equips participants with a broad understanding of commercial print. With an emphasis on printing processes and production workflow, it will enable candidates to define and communicate their individual printing requirements.
Prerequisites:
No prior experience in printing is necessary - although application is open to persons wishing to advance their knowledge of print production and procedures.
Topics include:
1. Introduction
- Discuss the processes of printing, finishing and associated manufacture.
- Discover the diverse industry of printing.
- Identify what will be covered throughout the day.
2. Printing processes
Identify the major printing processes including:
- Digital Printing
- Offset Lithographic printing
- Gravure printing
- Flexographic printing
- Letterpress printing
- Screen printing
3. Workflow and requirements
- Compare and contrast desktop printing to commercial printing.
- Compare and contrast digital printing to lithographic printing.
- Identify job specifications and appropriate printing processes for specific work.
- Discuss possible problems that may be encountered.
- Identify printing workflow procedures including:
- Determining the product
- Preparing the artwork
- Job scheduling
- Employing proofing and approval procedures
4. The end product
- Discover finishing processes including trimming, folding, laminating, varnishing, packaging, binding and book work.
- Embellishment, plastic extrusion, die cutting and special requirements are discussed.
- Production for the following will be discussed:
- Stationery and brochures
- Bookwork and multiple pages
- Packaging and cartoning
- Promotional printing
5. Ink on paper
- Discuss paper and paperboard quality and characteristics.
- Identify characteristics of ink for the different printing processes.
6. Quotes and costs
- Determine costs involved.
- Compare quotes and pricing structures.
