Visy picks up packaging & label printer
The deal further consolidates the packaging print industry as Visy attempts to move up the value chain. The P&I plant, in Sydney suburb, Milperra, is recognized as one of the most up-to-date facilities in the country. Extensive capital investment in recent years, including a re-fit with KBA presses, has produced a benchmark production facility.
P&I was sold by the family of co-founder Brian Ireland who along with Hayes Petersen began the concern in the early 1960s. It employs over 100 people at its Sydney plant where Geoff Ireland is the current managing director.
The move by privately-owned Visy is part of the packaging giant’s strategy to migrate into higher-value niche markets. The $3 billion company is one of the largest producers of corrugated cardboard boxes in the world. Visy operates more than 100 packaging factories and recycling sites across Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
