Recognising the changing dynamics of the packaging and signage printing market where the company specialised, Tony Fisher, managing director, bought his first Vutek from DES after a visit to the SGIA exhibition in Las Vegas in 2009. “There had been a notable decline in print quantities in our current markets and an increased presence of higher speed digital copier equipment, eroding the lower run quantities. Strategies were required for the ongoing health of the business and recognising the technologies that would have the best synergies for our business was important,” said Fisher at a recent LIA tour of his plant. “We also needed to recognise that he technology would continue to improve exponentially and that that meant investing in technology at level that would not be outdated quickly.” The investment strategy meant the company was looking at an ROI of less than three years, while upgrading the equipment also during that time. It involved providing everything for customers from prototyping to direct print to substrate in the short run packaging and display services area. ”We could now offer a diverse range of products in A2, A1 and A0+. We had combined technologies that would complement one another. More campaigns could be completed and kept in-house,” he said. John Fisher Printing has now upgraded its wide-format capability to incorporate the very latest LED ‘cool cure’ technology with the Vutek GS3250lx Pro. It enables the company to service the packaging industry’s requirement for short-run corrugated sheets and boxes. “It also allows us to print to thin film plastics, mirror finish acrylics and even bubble wrap. We’ve increased throughput with the addition of continuous board feed and media rail guides to effectively handle the larger runs of lined corrugated boards, which are notoriously susceptible to moisture, heat and excessive curling,” said Fisher.
