When the publishers come out to play - Galley Club Awards
The 31st annual awards night was held on 15 June, Sydney and hosted by the Galley Club. Designed to recognise excellence in books and magazines, the night drew a strong crowd.
"This evening is about passion for your work and achieving outstanding quality and excellence," Michael Schulz, Galley Club president told the crowd. "We're here tonight to honour that excellence." Schulz admitted that the Galley Club had been somewhat quiet this year; but he hopes to draw in as many people as possible by incorporating forums into the club's monthly meetings.

Guest speaker Samantha Brett, (pictured) whose blog Sam & the City has earned her a reputation as Australia's answer to sexpert and relationship extraordinaire Carrie Bradshaw livened up the night with a speech about the age-old debate of just what it is that women want. Ranging from the Beckham-inspired metrosexual to the more recent technosexual - which she believes Schulz is the perfect embodiment of - Brett provided the ladies with some tips on how to change their men's bad habits.
When Icons and Art won not once but four times - including the honourable Australian Printed Book of the Year and The Galley Club Award for Excellence in Book Production and Manufacture, Mark Bloustien, managing director of Hyde Park Press, that printed the book, could not believe his luck. "I'm over the moon," he said. "I really didn't expect it. I came all the way from Adelaide so it's a fantastic feeling."
On reflection, Schulz described the night as a great success. "I think the awards went very well," he said. "We had a close to record attendance of 214 publishers, printers and designers. We had very good feedback and everybody enjoyed themselves during this very social event."
