Legend Jack Styring to Call PICA Cup

There’s no more exciting place than Melbourne during Cup Week and now that excitement will well and truly carry over into the PICA Victoria Presentation Dinner, with racing legend Jack Styring calling The PICA Cup – a phantom race with very real prizes – at the event on the night of 4 November.

Jack’s name may not be familiar to everyone, but anyone who has ever been interested in racing in Australia will recognise his voice instantly from his famous race calls and be familiar with his characteristic turn of phrase, which has given birth to now famous ‘Styringisms’ like ‘racing up the straight, baring his molars to the breeze’ and ‘pulling like a Collins Street dentist’.

The 81 year old is the world’s longest-serving race caller (you can check the Guiness Book of World Records on that), officially calling his last race early this year after a career spanning nearly 65 years. Although he will still call a select few regional meetings each year, there are not many opportunities to hear Jack weave his magic – but PICA Victoria organisers have secured the legend for The PICA Cup, a guaranteed highlight of the evening.

The PICA Presentation Dinner is, of course, all about Awards and this year there will be more than ever before. As well as the coveted PICA medals, a special presentation will be made to the winning table – named after a previous Melbourne Cup winner – in The PICA Cup. There will also be special awards for ‘Fashions on the Field’ which is sure to encourage guests to bring the elegance and pizzazz of the racetrack in to Melbourne’s Sofitel Melbourne on Collins Ballroom.

Other highlights of the night will include another well-known name in racing, sports and the media, Emma Freedman, who will host the evening, and one of Australia’s most versatile show bands, “Big City Beat”, whose impressive repertoire and exciting stage performance is sure to have guests up and dancing.
