Letters, feedback, get it off your chest: 24 April 2008

This year's National Print Awards cop a bad wrap from one reader who reckons printers lack manners. Meanwhile, Westprint's green hangers make some printers see red.

Letter of the week

Re: Oh what a night! National Print Awards 25 years on
As was the case last year I must say that I am amazed with your most enthusiastic praise of this years National Print Awards. While the importance of such a night can not be overstated the fact is that despite what appears to be the best efforts of the committee the night itself , for any one interested in the actual presentation, was a non-event.

I agree it is a great opportunity for networking, unfortunately most of this is done during the presentations and it was clear that the hosts, though battling on, knew they were pretty much defeated after the 4 th award.

Together with our merchant arms, Australian Paper form one part of the PaperlinX major sponsorship; having of course the opportunity to present one of the highlight awards, an award we are very proud of.  Once again whatever was being said was pretty much drowned out by a non-caring audience.

We wait in anticipation the "new format" - hopefully we can bring some balance to the networking / awards.

Re: Hotel all hung up over recycled hanger

What a great news story. I feel all gushy inside knowing that The Langham and Westprint have come up with a totally original idea!!

I think you guys, as journalists, should actually provide the facts when reporting feel good stories such as this so people can have a balanced view of what really transpires in situations such as this. We at Green Hanger communicated with The Langham with the aim of supplying these hangers for their business.

Please feel free to take a look at our hanger design and you'll see not just striking similarities, but an exact replica of our hanger. http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenhanger/sets/72157603372661039/

Westprint should hang their head in shame if the best they can come up with is to copy existing designs. Of course there are other cardboard coathangers on the market but this is truly a disgrace!

Rest assured we are seeking legal advice.

I think you'll find that Westprint has merely ripped off an Australian innovation, The Green Hanger.

As you will see the shape, concept and even idea of debossing of information has been plagiarised.

We spoke to Langham Hotel nine months ago and supplied them with a sample in good faith, as well as working on there behalf with Carbon Zero on developing an environmental program with them.

So much for big companies ripping off ideas of companies who actually have a passion for the environment. Think you'll find it called "green washing" where the dollar is more important than the environment. Look at our site greenhanger.com.au for more information.

Westprint definately did not develop this product just ripped another one off. More pics can be found at: flickr.com/photos/greenhanger/

I was pleased to read about Bruce Lowery's appointment with PIAA. I had the pleasure of having many years of business involvement with Bruce during his various roles at Agfa and always found him to be one of nature's true gentlemen. In all our meetings I found him to be courteous and friendly (even on issues we chose to disagree about) he had a great sense of humour and I was always pleased to spend time in his company.

Bruce, I wish you all the best in your new role and judging by the photo that accompanied the article, the sabbatical did you good.

Re: Internet print scam comes out of Africa

At 7.29pm on Sunday 20/04/08, we received an email from a Rev. Justin (justinbarnard@yahoo.com) requesting some information on whether we print brochures and banners. They also asked our method of payment. I replied but the email was undeliverable as the account had (already!) been disabled or discontinued. It could just be spam but it's interesting how well it was targetted so I thought I should let you know in case the information is helpful.

Victor Stranges.
