The winds of change: 9 February 2011

Plenty happening this week as the well-known Chris Aguis moves from Heidelberg to Soar Print, while Jodie Sangster returns to ADMA as its new CEO; Fairfax appoints journo, Gregory Hywood to the role of CEO and managing director and DES holds a training day.

Aguis sights set on Soar Printing
Chris Aguis is the latest addition to Auckland’s print powerhouse, Soar Printing.

Two years ago, Aguis (pictured) and his family left Australia after he took on the role of general manager – sales at Heidelberg New Zealand following the departure of Hemi Brown, only to depart the company last year.

You can’t keep a good printer down, though. Aguis has recently resurfaced as operations manager at Soar Printing. No one wants to talk about the appointment much, but Aguis’ background in lean manufacturing can only be a benefit to Soar Printing, which is one of New Zealand’s best-known print companies.

ADMA fills Rob Edwards’ shoes
Jodie Sangster is the new CEO of the Australian Direct Marketing Association. She takes charge when current CEO, Rob Edwards, steps down in June after 18 years at the helm.

Sangster (pictured) is no stranger to ADMA and its members. As a former director – legal and regulatory affairs for the association, joining on her arrival from the UK in 2001, she is well known throughout the industry. In her role with ADMA she played a pivotal role in the development of legislation such as the Spam Act, Do Not Call Register Act and APEC Privacy Principles.

Previously, she was with the UK Direct Marketing Association with responsibility for both UK and European regulatory affairs.

More recently she was chief privacy and compliance officer for data marketing service provider, Acxiom, in Australia before moving to the USA. She joined the US-based DMA in 2009 as senior vice president of education and global development.

“I’m looking forward to returning to ADMA at what is an exciting time for the marketing community and for the Association. The growth of marketing channels, the convergence of on and off line media and focus on customer-centricity presents significant opportunities for marketers. It also brings new learnings and challenges which current and future members will look to us to continue championing,” said Sangster.

Rob Edwards also voiced his support of the appointment. “Having worked closely with Jodie during her time at ADMA, and providing the introduction to the DMA that saw her take up her current role, I’m delighted to be able to pass her the baton and looking forward to seeing the great things I know she will do in the years to come,” he said.

Sangster will return to Sydney in April, while Edwards will remain with ADMA in a consulting capacity for a period after the transition in April.

Newspaper man new Fairfax CEO
Fairfax has found a replacement for Brian McCarthy in award-winning journalist, Greg Hywood, (pictured) a non-executive director who has been working as interim CEO following McCarthy’s departure.

According to Fairfax Media chairman. Roger Corbett, it was Hywood’s experience and knowledge of the sector that made him a stand-out choice.

“I look forward to harnessing its great strengths and to take full advantage of the many opportunities to ensure the years to come are the most successful,” he said.

Newspapers have faced an up-hill battle in the face of the digital age, but Hywood is unperturbed. “From today, we will be doing it better – more creatively, more commercially, more efficiently and effectively,” he said.

Conference keeps DES staff in top form
DES staff from all around Australia descended in Sydney this month for an important two-day conference and training which gave all employees an overview of the strategic direction of DES’ products and a look at what’s happening in the industry complete with demonstrations (pictured below) of EFI’s VUTEk, Rastek and Jetrion.

According to managing director, Ian Clare, the two days were time well spent for all staff. “It gave us the opportunity to discuss ways to further support our customer base, as well as review new colour management products that are coming onto the market,” he said.
